A computer "virus" is malicious software that interferes with the normal operation of an infected computer system. The effects of viruses range anywhere from benign to destructive, depending on what it was programmed to do.
Unlike viruses that can infect people an animals, computer viruses do not occur naturally because they are programmed intentionally.
