"Root" is the de facto standard default login name for full and unrestricted administrative access to Unix and Linux servers, plus a few others including some mainframe systems.

On many systems it's not uncommon for the "root" account to also have certain default restrictions such as to prevent logging in remotely.  There is a long-standing tradition among many computer professionals to not login directly with the "root" account for general as a secure means to prevent an unintended or accidental catastrophe.
