Currency Root :: Library :: Glossary :: Hacking

"Hacking" is the advanced use of computer technology to accomplish vague or specific goals.  This is a neutral term that is sometimes misunderstood as having a negative connotation.

"Dark hacking" often includes the goal of gaining unauthorized access to data, although not necessarily with destructive intent (which would also included in the "dark hacking" classification).

"Ethical hacking" (or "bright hacking," which is a fairly rare slang alternative) always includes an element of having proper authorization.  An example of "ethical hacking" would be where an employer hires a hacker to test the security of their computer systems by attempting to "hack into it."
