A "database" is a specialized methodology for the storage of data that also provides an effective system of retrieval and modification.

Many databases are used to store large amounts of information, particularly in the government, banking, stock exchange, and transportation industries, military applications, and to meet the needs of multi-national corporations.  Databases work very well for small applications too, including personal phone books, small business accounting software, eMail folders, video games, etc.
